1.Know your Complexion and Skin Type
Before even starting your makeup, you should know about your complexion and your skin type. You should know exactly what type of products will suit you as per your skin type. You should know the exact shade of your skin and the perfect colour that will complement it. You should be aware of what your skin concerns and what would you like to hide using makeup. So knowing your skin type and complexion is very important before choosing your skin care products and makeup.
2. Moisturizing is Must
Moisturizing your face is the first and actually the most crucial and important step of doing makeup. You should moisturize your face evenly and uniformly and the motion of your fingers should be upwards and circular. It should be absorbed into your skin.
It’s very important to choose your moisturizer as per your skin type. You should be aware of your skin type and should know if your skin is dry, oily or combination. Moisturizers vary from being water base to cream base and that makes them from being light to heavy.
Face Mists
Face mists are water-based. It helps your skin to be moisturized and hydrated throughout the day. They also boost your skin with vitamins and contain beautiful fragrances.
Serums
Serums are alsoquite light but not as watery as face mists.Serums are used to moisturize your skin as well as to treat and curb certain skin issues and signs of ageing. It gives some shine to dull looking skin.
Lotions
Lotions can be used on all skin types. The only specification that you should see while buying is for ‘non-comedogenic’, this will help your pores not to get clogged up.
Creams
If your skin feels dry then the cream based moisturizers are perfect for you. They are quite thick and heavy and so they hydrate your skin really well.
Oils
If your skin is super dry or you have mature skin then go for essential oils.They are thicker than creams and gives more moisturization. You can find few good oils as per your skin type. They are available for normal, dry and sensitive skin. But if you are prone to acne or have oily skin, then avoid using oils. You can opt for any of the above moisturizing options.
3. Apply Primer
You should always invest in a good primer for yourself. Primer keeps your makeup intact while looking fresh all the day. Primer should be applied irrespective of whether you are going for a heavy layer of foundation or just a lighter coat of it. Is acts as a base to your foundation. It also helps to fill out your pores and even out the texture of the skin. You can choose the primer as per your skin type as it comes in the form of hydrating, mattifying, illuminating, colour correcting and pore filling primer.
4. Choose Your Foundation

Concealing your foundation is a very important step in makeup. Concealers are an important part of your kitand is used to awaken the part below your eyes and to highlight the face. It also hides pimples, blemishes, fine lines, wrinkles and dark circles.
Concealers are also available in liquid and cream forms and you can choose your concealer as per your skin type and coverage needed.
It’s advisable to buy concealer that is one to two shade lighter than your skin tone to highlight your face, and the same shade or a slightly deeper shade if you want to correct your marks and blemishes.
You should apply concealers under your eyes in a triangular form to cover the dark circles and blend it outwards into the foundation. For spots and skin blemishes you should dab the product into the skin rather than blending it.
6. Blush On
Blush is a makeup product that has been popular for decades now. A blush can be a little intimidating to a beginner. But, there’s nothing to be intimidated aboutit as you just have to find the right shade which suits your skin tone.
Make sure that you start with little and do not put on too much blush. Apply the blush well on your cheekbones towards your ears and in upward strokes. However, there’s never a correct or accepted way to apply blush. You should always take your face shape into consideration while applying blush. It will help you to enhance your look.
7. Bronzer
Bronzer helps you to achieve that sun-kissed look. It adds warmth to your face, you just need to choose the right shade of bronzer as per your skin tone. You should go for a bronzer that is one to two shade darker than your skin tone.
It helps in giving some definition and depth to your face. You should always blend the bronzer into your neck area also.
8. Highlighter
“ If you can’t see my highlighter from space then I am not wearing enough.”
Highlighter gives you a much bolder look that also compliments the entire makeup.You should apply highlighter on the high points of your face like, top of the cheekbones, bridge of the nose, cupid’s bow and the centre of the chin and forehead.Highlighters also come in different forms- powders, liquids and creams. You can choose any of the form as per your choice or you can combine two to three form also.
9. Don’t Forget the Brows
Your look is just incomplete without filling in your bows. Brows frames your face. Make sure that your brows are in shape, properly groomed and the stray hairs are plucked. You can take the help of a professional in properly grooming your brows if you are unsure about it.
For filling in the gaps in brows you will find a variety of products like, brow wax, gels or pomade, pencils, powders and brow mascara.
You should always fill in your brows in soft strokes. It should look natural and the most important tip is to never fill in your brows with black colour.
10. Putting Eyeshadow
It’s time to choose your eyeshadow as eye makeup gives your eyes a definition.
You should start with priming your eyes first as it will serve as a base for your eyeshadow and will prevent it from creasing. Eyeshadow primers also makes the eyeshadow colour more sharp and vibrant.
Now, you can choose your eyeshadow on depending upon the look you want to create. If you are going for a day or neutral look then you can opt for light hue eyeshadows. But, if you are going for a party or evening look then you can play with bold and dark colours. Just remember to invest in good quality eyeshadow brushes and blending the eyeshadow seamlessly.
If you want to intensify the colours of the eyeshadow then you can use eye pencils as the base for them. If you want to pop the lighter colours like yellow, blue or orange then you can use white or nude pencils on your eyelids before putting the eyeshadow. This will help to make the colour pop. Same way, if you want to create intense smokey eyes, then you can use creamy brown or black pencil as the base. You can also add a pop of highlighter in the corner of your eyes. It will open up your eyes and will make them look bigger and brighter.
11. Tricks for the Eyeliner
Eyeliners give your eyes a defined look and makes them stand out. There are many types of eyeliner that you can try depending upon your eye shape like, winged liner, the cat eye, smudgy liner and a lot others. Eyeliner is a thing to experiment and seewhat works best for you.
As a beginner, it’s advisable to start with eye pencils as they are easy to apply and can be easily wiped off also in case of any mistake. You can start with dotting the liner and then joining them to achieve the perfect liner. You can also use eye stencils or tape to achieve the perfect wing. Once you are pro with your eyeliner application, you can use liquid or gel liners. They are quite long lasting and water proof.
If your eyeliner tends to smudge then you can top it up with powder eyeshadow. This will prevent the eyeliner from unwanted movement and will make it long lasting as well.
12. Mascara
Mascara is the most important thing in an eyemakeup. Even if you don’t have time to apply eyeshadow or an eyeliner, then just a few strokes of mascara will open up your eyes and will make it look bold and beautiful.
Mascara is mostly used to lengthen your lashes and to add volume to it. They are available in different colours but the most popular one has always been black.
Always try to curl your lashes using an eyelash curler before applying the mascara. It will add drama to it and will enhance the look even more.
13. Lipstick and Lip Gloss
Like the face and eyes, you should prep your lips also for the lipstick application. Exfoliate your lips and apply lip balm to get that soft and supple lips. It will make your lipstick glide on the lips.
Lipstick is an integral part of makeup. Women are born with the talent to apply makeup.
You can start with lining your lips with the liner that is of the similar shade to your lipstick. It helps to give shape to the lips and prevent the lipstick from bleeding. If you want a fuller lips then you can slightly line your lips outside the normal lip line, just make sure that you don’t overdraw the lips too much as it will look really fake and crazy. You can also add clear or shimmer gloss to the centre of your top and bottom lips. It also gives it a fuller look.

14. Finishing Powder
While the primer sets the base for your makeup and seals it, a finishing powder sets it and helps you to get rid of any shine off your face. A good finishing powder makes sure that your foundation is in place and helps in keeping an oily face at bay. If you have really oily t-zone then you can also carry pressed powders with you to dab it in between. It will prevent oil from showing.
15. Setting Spray
The last step in makeup application is setting spray.
It helps to keep makeup intact and remain all day long. It also helps you to keep your makeup flawless.
You need to apply the setting spray just like your hairspray. Spray it on your face as a mist. Do not rub or touch your face just after you have sprayed the setting spray.Allow it to dry on its own.
